A double-bill UK tour by Harold Budd and The Necks with visuals and lighting design by Russell Mills for Sound and Music.
Given the open improvisational nature of the live performances of Budd and The Necks, Mills’ created a film and lighting design
that was capable of lasting over two hours without any element being repeated. The film was made using hundreds of found and flawed 35mm colour transparencies and film strip ends, which were overlaid, scanned and then treated so as to produce highly saturated images, which were edited into a seamlessly unfolding series of multi-coloured veils. An aleotoric lighting system was also devised, similarly designed to continually cycle through multiple permutations at an imperceptibly slow rate of change in luminosity and between individual lights.
