Installed for Futuresonic04 at Urbis Manchester 28th April
– 8th May 2004
7 motors (1 RPM), 7 silvered aluminium bowls, copper wire,
recycled red bricks, bones, water, ashes, metal, food colouring,
oil, petrol, varnish, rusted metal, methylated spirits, turpentine
spirits, washing-up liquid, dirt.
Sound: 1 CD player, 3 c-ducer contact microphones, mixing
desk, 2 Korg Kaoss pads, amps, 4 pairs of speakers.
Seven ceaselessly turning stones shape seven metal bowls,
which in their turn effect new sculptings of the stones. Each
round producing small, indeterminate, hesitant scrapings,
the sounds of the uneasy symbiosis between the environment
and humankind - a reciprocal process of continual transition
between flux and fixity, between the ethereal and the enduring.
Both aleatoric and predictive processes of sound intervention
explore and allude to woven notions of our multiple senses
of place, time and consciousness. The future merges present
and past at the moment of passing, of revolution. As we anticipate
possible futures, the past swells and the future diminishes.
